The certain distance between people is defined by the social status of people that communicate with each other, their national qualities, age, gender as well as type of relations. And this is also one of the forms of nonverbal communication that is useful to know. By the way this knowledge is widely used by psychologists, sociologists and political scientists.

It is possible to determine relations of people who are sitting at one table. The position of the corner sitting is the most favourable for communication of teacher and student, boss and employer as both partners have enough space for gestures and eyes contact. The corner of the table is the calming barrier that protects from the sudden changes. The eyes of partners don't cross and it is always possible to direct eyes to the object and concentrate on the answer in the case of complicated moments of discussion.

There are different types of distance between two speaking people. These types are: public distance that supposes the distance 3.5 meters between the speaking people, social that makes 3.5 – 1.5 meters, personal that makes from 1.5 meters to 40 centimetres, intimate and extremely intimate that makes 40 centimetres and closer.

During speaking and in general in every-day life people use public distance with unknown people that they see for the first and the last time probably. Social one is the most frequent and is used with friends and relatives. Personal one is for friends and relatives and intimate is for close friends and people who are in love.
